Fake Morgan dollars Are getting better

Morgans are quickly becoming a favorite but man, the counterfeits are getting good. At a recent show, a seller had a batch of raw Morgans that looked legit at first glance, like legit good toning, decent wear pattern, and the weight was close. But after a closer look, I could tell something was off, the lettering and the ring test gave it away

I know the basics of checking the weight (26.73g), magnet test, edge reeding, and stuff but I'd love to hear if you guys have other ways of spotting fakes if you're conversant with Morgan dollars and have you ever come across a fake?

Oh, this happened to me too! Got a fake Morgan early on at a flea market. It passed the weight and magnet tests and stuff. But I thought that the font on E PLURIBUS UNUM was just slightly off, and the eagle's feathers looked too soft. Since then, I always carry a loupe and use a digital caliper to check diameter and thickness.

at least buy a pocket pinger, download a ping test app on you phone or if you are going to be seriously accumulating. spend a $grand and get a sigma precious metals verifier.

I don't want to sound like an overly protective mother, but the flea market? That's like asking for trouble In any case, yes, they've become quite good at this which is quite scary, especially for future generations. We can tell it's a fake one way or another, but as the counterfeiters get better, more and more people won't be able to tell the difference.

Just seen a video showing the ring test balance coin on one finger and tap with pen ,ring or sound should be sharp not a thunk ,it showed a canadian maple fake

my ring test is balancing a morgan on one fingertip and balancing another on the other hand fingertip then lightly tapping the two together. what a nice pinging sound you should get, then i use my sigma metalytics verifier. two days ago i traded (sold) about $400 face of worn quarters and halfs and bought all the silver dollars my lcs had at the time. i got about another 300 mixed morgan/peace at $29.75 each. basically about a dime under melt at the time. i did get many AU in the mix, and a couple almost
BU but i need to take these to another more local dealer that can tell if they are cleaned or actually AU/BU
