Cleaning black spots on a silver bar

I saw a silver bar in my grandmother's house recently. the silver looks okay and it istill sealed! but it has some black spots on the surface. Can I crack it open and polish the spots? is it safe to store it along with my other pieces though? 

if polishing is the way to go, what's the best way to clean those little black marks without messing things up? thanks!

Black spots are most likely tarnish. It's not dangerous don't worry! Pretty common among silver. You can open and polish but the value may drop a little bit if it's a collector itim or a sealed piece. Don't use abrasives ok?

I've dealt with a few like that, and yeah those black spots are usually just tarnish...so you can crack it open if it's not a collectible slab, but try a silver-safe polish like Hagerty or a baking soda paste with gentle rubbing. Just go easy and no harsh scrubbing, and yeah, once cleaned, it's safe to store with your other pieces
